Prof. Yoram Peri

The Association’s Third Chairperson

Prof. Yoram Peri, born in Jerusalem, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology and political science and in communications from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a doctorate from LSE. He founded and directed the Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies and was the Kay Chair of Israel Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, posts from which he retired in the summer of 2021. He was also the founder and editor-in-chief of the Israel Studies Review.

Prof. Peri was previously head of the Haim Herzog Institute for Communication, Society and Politics at Tel Aviv University, political adviser to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Davar. He was the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship and guest lecturer in many universities and research institutes, including Harvard University, Dartmouth College, Stiftung Disenchant und Politik in Berlin, and the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington. Prof. Peri has published six books and scores of articles on civil-military relations, communications, and politics, focusing on Israel. His most recent book in Hebrew, Communication Guided Wars: The Paradox of Power and the Israel’s Strategic Dilemma, published by INSS – was awarded the Israel Communications Association prize for 2017.

His book Brothers at War: Rabin’s Assassination and the Cultural War in Israel was awarded the President and Prime Minister’s Prize and the Israeli Political Science Association prize for 2015. His book, Generals in the Cabinet Room: How the Military Shapes Israel Policy, was awarded the prestigious prize of the Association of Academic Publishers and Public Libraries in the United States.
