Greetings to all Association members,
On assuming responsibility as chair of the Association I would like to inform you of a number of new directions that are currently being developed for our future activities.
Annual Conference
The Association’s annual conference will be held one year from today, in February 2022, and the organizing committee will shortly issue a call for proposals with details of the theme of the conference and its location. In advance of the conference, the Association will promote various activities s with the aim of enriching the discussions in our fields of interest, and contributing to the debates at the conference. These activities include:
Launch of a workshop for doctoral students to assist and encourage them to promote their research projects and present their work at the conference.
Study tours – Study tours are designed to enhance knowledge in research groups, which I hope will be expressed in conference sessions and workshops. Study tour participants will be researchers who intend to present new research at the conference. As of now, the topics of the planned tours include: youth and military service, archaeology, society, and security.
Preliminary conferences – The Association will support one-day preliminary conferences in preparation for the annual Kinneret conference. The mini-conferences will focus on the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the link between the army and society, induction into the IDF and the service experience, among other topics.
Board Members
The following members will join the Board as temporary members until their appointment is approved by the general meeting, which will take place at the annual conference:
Professor Ayelet Harel Shalev, Ben Gurion University of the Negev
Dr. Eitan Shamir, Bar-Ilan University
Dr. Irit Shafran-Gittleman, Israel Democracy Institute
Scientific Journal
The Association’s scientific journal, “The Israeli Journal of Society, Military, and National Security,” is published jointly with Ma’arachot, the publisher of professional content on the military and national security for the IDF. The Journal is edited by Prof. Uri Bar-Yosef of Haifa University. The first issue was published and a call for papers for the second issue will shortly be published. The journal’s title reflects the Association’s desire to expand its membership and influence.
Other Activities
We are planning a number of new activities that include an annual survey and publication of a bi-monthly update on the Association’s fields of interest. Association members are invited to suggest the topics to be covered by the updates.
Funding
Our activities require financial support, and I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to each and every one of you to donate to the Association – openly or anonymously. I am also currently making efforts to identify donors willing to assist us. Referrals to potential contributors will be gratefully received.
I am at the service of each of you in promoting the Association’s aims.
Sincerely,
Prof. Uzi Ben-Shalom
Chair of the Association of Civil-Military Studies in Israel
